I am thrilled to not be the only source of content for this newsletter. Hopefully this is the start of a trend. Since this is the first full-length edition of this newsletter, I’ve been fairly liberal with what I have included. Hopefully there’s something for everyone to enjoy….
Quantum Mayhem
Apparently, you can learn what quantum computing is while dancing at the same time. I did not know that. But the next time someone asks you what quantum computing is, crank up your volume and click on this link. It might require a LinkedIn account.
Introduction to Quantum Computer Music
You can’t get much more creative than using multi-million-dollar quantum computers to compose music, although I’m admittedly biased because I’ve composed music with several quantum computers. It’s absolutely fascinating listening to what they come up with. This link might require a LinkedIn account.
Bye bye D-Wave!
I have to include the June 10th edition of Quantum Pirates for this one line. Like the punishment of Sisyphus — who was condemned for eternity to roll a boulder up a hill only for it to roll back down when it nears the top — using D-Wave is an act of futility. Project after project, year after year, it always falls short.
Quantum Dry
This anti-perspirant is at least as quantum as some of the “quantum” nonsense you’ll see on your timeline today. Rexona has gone the extra mile and blown some hype bubbles: coverage doesn’t last 72 hours and the “best-ever” is not noticeably different than in years past. But I still buy it for the name, so I say, “well played.”
Remote Entanglement Demands a Sacrifice
I’ve waited since 2021 to use this soul stone analogy. True story. The downside of finally using it is that I have more articles in the pipeline, and it is really, really hard to follow Thanos. But I’m thrilled that Microsoft and Photonic eventually gave me an excuse to dust it off and get it published.
Want a cookie?
Joking about a cookie-involving experiment is a nice, momentary diversion. But for a few extra moments of diversion, be sure to read through the comments; you’ll find some legitimate quantum-themed jokes mixed in there. This link might require a LinkedIn account, however.
Building Quantum Software
I’m not sharing this short video because of the style or content of the video, per se, but for the creativity in promoting a book about quantum computing. There are so many books out there; should you buy this one? In less than three minutes, this video will give you your answer.
Sonar 2024
Lots going on with quantum music this week, including an event that is featuring live demonstrations of two quantum computing applications involving audio. That’s the extent of my knowledge about it. This link might require a LinkedIn account, but let’s click on it together in three… two… one….
Shor’s Algorithm
This is an old video, and I haven’t watched it, and so I’m not commenting on its accuracy or anything. I simply think it’s hilarious that a YouTube channel called minutephysics needs 17.5 minutes to explain Shor’s Algorithm. Yeah, it’s a doozy to explain, but a high-level introduction still needs to be one or two minutes.
What You Shouldn't Know About Quantum Computers
This book isn’t new this week, but this is my first opportunity to include it in this newsletter. If you don’t follow Prof. Chris Ferrie, this newsletter is probably going to start feeling like you are. This book is available as a free download, and you can order a physical copy.
Majorana Qubits are Inherently Stable
I’m sharing this one for the visualization. This link brings you to a relatively-short article that is written in plain English but contains a link to the paper for those inclined to read it. It also contains a photograph that drives home a point they are trying to make about the stability of Majorana qubits.
Thank you so much for making me laugh 😆😎 you’re the best at making this tsunami 🌊 so sweet and loving ! Bravo 👏😁
What an honor to have my snarky comments in your newsletter! :) Fantastic edition Brian!
