This week started off slowly, so I used DALL-E 3 more times than I normally would just to add some visual interest. Eventually I discovered some images and videos to include, so this edition gradually became chock full of non-textual elements. Which is your favorite? My vote is for the laughing chart; that’s just hilarious.
Quokka: More Than Meets The Eye
What the heck is Quokka? To answer this question, I needed to invoke not one, not two, but four franchises: Transformers, Star Trek, Newhart, and Spiderman. And to be honest, the Star Trek reference in my head is actually based on the Ace Ventura (Jim Carrey) impression of Lt Cmdr Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, so that’s five.
Lost Opportunity
Quantum Pirates used the term “smashed” a couple of times last weekend and therefore missed an incredible — pardon the pun — opportunity to invoke the Hulk. I can’t pass on this opportunity, however, so I’m taking the liberty of suggesting the image above. Please take a look, commit it to memory, and then read the newsletter.
Shopping the Quantum Computer Supermarket
Deciding which quantum computer(s) to use, lease, or purchase could involve lots of technical information, of course, but Moody’s Analytics used a supermarket analogy. And to simplify the selection process, the article focuses on what would actually be on the shelves today if such a supermarket existed.
Freelancers Available!
This week’s edition is once again sponsored by me. If I sponsor my own newsletter enough times, I’m hoping to give myself a discount. Seriously, though, I know a couple of freelancers who are looking for work. Realistically, being in the Philippines, I could probably find affordable freelancers for just about anything.
I’m not the worst!
I know the author and I’m taking this as a compliment, but it made me think about how hard it would be to actually be the worst writer in quantum. I’m not one to shy away from controversy, but I’ve seen some content that has been universally condemned. Three memorable posts include:
The superconducting laptop quantum computer that would require you to literally crush the chandelier in order to close the lid
The quantum computer you would mount on the top of your car and require you to drive really, really fast to cool down the qubits
The planet Jupiter is somehow a quantum computer; I learned through a private channel that this one had some backlash to it
It’s laughing at me.
I needed to troubleshoot a solver I added to QFStudio, a Moody’s Analytics collaboration with Multiverse Computing that is powered by QCentroid. The bug involved a silly typo I had made in a GitHub repository. Upon resolution, the chart of the solution, cropped above, was literally laughing at me. #WellPlayed
Instant Replay
I’m not critiquing the content of this video; I am applauding the use of plain English video explainers. Over a few short minutes, general audiences can enjoy an executive summary of the research and determine whether or not to read the associated paper for more information.
Right Said Schrödinger
I’m thrilled to announce that I just became a pro bono supermodel for Alice & Bob. You can see me above wearing my new favorite t-shirt, mostly for the design but also because black is slimming. Sing it with me: “I’m a model, you know what I mean, and I do my little turn on the CATwalk. Yeah, on the CATwalk. On the CATwalk, yeah!”

Wow, I had completely forgotten that song existed and now it has been involuntarily pulled to the front of my mind. But I won't hold that against this edition...fun & entertaining as always!!
